3 Men Caught Breaking Into Safe Stolen From Sands Point Home: Police
Two Port Washington men were charged with burglary, police say.
Three men were arrested in Glen Cove on Wednesday after they were caught breaking into a safe that was stolen from a Sands Point home earlier this week, police say.
Glen Cove police officers received a 911 call that three men were trying to break into the safe behind a 131 Glen Cove Ave. home at 6:31 p.m.
Officers arrived to the scene and saw three men allegedly breaking into the safe:

- Elmer Mendez, 19, of Port Washington
- Jose Chevez, 36, of Glen Cove
A third man was arrested but charges were later dismissed.
An investigation revealed the safe and other items at the scene, which is the residence of Chevez, were proceeds from a Sands Point burglary that occurred on Cornwells Beach Road on Monday at 6 p.m.

All three men were charged with second-degree criminal possession of stolen property and second-degree criminal mischief. Another man was additionally charged with two counts of third-degree burglary and Mendez was additionally charged with third-degree burglary.
It was determined Chevez was not involved in the burglary, police say.
The three men will be arraigned Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
