BAYVILLE, NY — A Glen Cove family will be honored on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the 20th anniversary Cooking for a Cure fundraiser in Bayville.
The event will be at the Crescent Beach Club on April 22 and will be raising funds for the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation.
Jaime Greenberg, diabetes-research advocate and father to two children, is working towards the goal of ending and preventing diabetes. His mother had diabetes, and his son Sean was also diagnosed with diabetes.
He took Sean to the doctor after he had begun to lose weight and noticed him drinking an excessive amount of water. After his type 1 diabetes diagnosis, Sean was rushed to Cohen's Children's Hospital for care.
At 21 years old, Sean is now able to continue playing hockey and live his life with the assistance of Dexcom, a continuous glucose monitor pump, as well as maintaining healthy nutritional habits and perseverance.
With both his son and mother diagnosed with diabetes, Jaime later learned he also had type 2 diabetes after a medical emergency. As Jaime was driving, he said he passed out behind the wheel.
"My blood sugar was through the roof," he said. "My mom was diabetic, so I always knew about diabetes, but I didn’t pick up on the signs for myself. It came out of left field."
The father has been outspoken about his passion to end diabetes.
"My goal and hope someday is for Sean and everyone with diabetes to have something in their bodies so they don’t have to take insulin anymore," he said.
Cooking for a Cure has raised more than $1.5 million for the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation. This supports work in cure and prevention-focused diabetes research.
which supports the Institute’s cutting-edge work as a world leader in cure- and prevention-focused diabetes research.
