SAFE GC Coalition: September is National Recovery Month

Recovery Month, started in 1989 by the Substance Abuse and Mental health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a national observance held every September to increase public awareness surrounding addiction recovery, promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation's strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible. The month raises awareness for available treatment and recovery support services, encourages community participation, and seeks to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help. Various organizations, including SAMHSA, provide resources and support to communities to help individuals and families thrive in recovery.

The theme for National Recovery Month 2026 is "Celebrating Connections: Restoring Every Aspect of Life." Connection has been presented as an antidote to addiction, a crucial factor to support people in their recovery, making them stronger and more resilient. Together, we ensure that the connections made through family, community, and support networks sustain recovery and bring hope to those struggling with substance use or gambling harms.

SAFE, Inc. is the only alcohol and substance abuse prevention, intervention and education agency in the City of Glen Cove and supports individuals in recovery. Its Coalition is conducting Alcohol, Tobacco, Opioid and Other Drug prevention awareness campaigns entitled.
