Cavallaro was first met by the Glen Cove EMS at the airport and was eventually intercepted by the Glen Cove Police Department at city lines, then passed through flag arches suspended by firetrucks to complete the marine's escort, said Councilman Tony Jimenez.

"I remember when I was in the army," said Jimenez, who received the Purple Heart and Army Commendation for Valor Under Fire during his time in Vietnam, and now also serves in the Glen Cove EMS. "It was a lot different returning home then, and it's important to the soldiers returning that they see our appreciation."

Cavallaro's father, also named Salvatore, said he was extremely proud of his son: "He did what he had to do, and it's great to see him again," he said.

Cavallaro – who worked as a Bulk Fuel Specialist in Afghanistan, managing and refueling convoys with the Ninth Engineer Battalion – said he plans to reenlist next year for his last year of enlistment.

"The response from the community is amazing, all I can say is thank you," said Cavallaro. "I also must say to everyone else who is out there serving, thank you, and I wish you all a safe return."
