DeRiggi-Whitton Honors Grandes For Italian Heritage Work

Angelo and Kathryn Grande were recently honored by Leg. DeRiggi-Whitton for their tireless commitment to preserving Italian heritage.

Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton recently honored Angelo and Kathryn Grande for their decades-long work in helping to preserve Italian heritage and culture. The Grandes have been active members of the Order Sons of Italy in America Loggia Glen Cove #1016 for more than 40 years. Kathryn and Angelo served as Loggia President from 2000 to 2002 and 2004 to 2006, respectively. Throughout their tenure with the Loggia, they have remained focused on preserving the rich heritage and culture of Italy, which includes organizing displays, meetings, speakers, fundraisers and many other events.

October is Italian Heritage and Culture month. Aside from helping to organize an annual Columbus Day parade held in Huntington, the Glen Cove Loggia #1016 has assembled an exhibit on display at the Locust Valley Public Library. Organized by the Grandes and other members of Loggia #1016, the exhibit that educates visitors about the deep, rich and proud history of Italy and residents of Italian heritage, while also featuring several speakers.

Loggia #1016 also raises thousands of dollars each year for various local, regional and statewide causes, as well as conducting ceremonies and celebrations for important Italian events and people. Just one example is St. Joseph’s Day, March 19. Italian-Americans celebrate Italy’s patron saint by wearing red and enjoying the feast day by giving food to the hungry. Sicilian folklore tells of a prayer to St. Joseph during a long drought. After praying, the rains came, saving the crops so the poor would have vegetables to eat, hence the reason the celebratory meals tend to be meatless.
