Glen Cove Police Department and Glen Cove School District Strengthen Bonds with Fifth Grade Students Through Ongoing Education Program

Glen Cove, NY — In an inspiring partnership that spans years and touches hundreds of young lives, the Glen Cove Police Department continues its impactful collaboration with the Glen Cove School District through a ten-session educational program designed to build trust, encourage wise decision-making, and foster early connections between law enforcement and students.

This year, fifth grade students at both Connolly and Landing Elementary Schools completed the program, which covers important topics such as internet safety, peer pressure, and the dangers of drugs and alcohol—all delivered during a critical stage in students’ development.

To celebrate the conclusion of the program, both schools hosted certificate ceremonies where students were recognized for their participation and engagement. Mayor Pamela Panzenbeck and Deputy Mayor Donna McNaughton joined the celebrations, where students expressed their appreciation for the officers and the positive relationships formed throughout the year.

“Visiting these students throughout the year isn’t just about safety, it’s about connection,” said Detective Ted Karousos. “When they see us as people who care, not just uniforms, that’s when the real bond begins.”

Mr. Monteleone, a fifth-grade teacher at Connolly School with 29 years in the district, reflected on the program’s value: “It’s incredible to watch the students form meaningful, lasting bonds with the officers at such a crucial time in their development. They face real challenges, and this is when they need guidance the most—not just about safety, but about knowing they have adults in their corner who genuinely care.”

Each year, the program concludes with heartfelt essays written by students, sharing what they’ve learned and the appreciation they feel for the officers who have become familiar and trusted figures in their classrooms.

The sessions are led by dedicated members of the Glen Cove Police Department who bring consistency, empathy, and care to each visit. For one officer, the program is especially personal—having participated in it as a student, it became the inspiration for a future in law enforcement.

Connolly School Principal Klatsky emphasized the program’s impact: “The partnership with the police reinforces for our students the support that our schools appreciate from the city, as well as the officers who give so much of their time and energy to support our youth.”

Mayor Panzenbeck echoed that sentiment. “This program is a shining example of what happens when we work together with care and purpose. It’s a reflection of Glen Cove at its best.”

Together, the Glen Cove Police Department and the Glen Cove School District are proving that mentorship, trust, and compassion are the foundation of community, and it starts in the classroom.
