Girls Lacrosse: Glen Cove 2011 Preview

Team looking for results after losing five seniors to graduation last season.

The girls lacrosse team returns 12 players this season and has a very fast and exciting group of new players joining the squad. Nassau Conference B-III is wide open, which means Big Red will have every opportunity to compete.

The coaches are very optimistic about this team; they are practicing well, working on new offensive and defensive plays. “It’s the team chemistry that is so powerful with this group,” coach Jacqueline Gow said.

  • Heather Artinian, senior, defense
  • Alex Gerin, junior attack
  • Cassandra Napoli, senior, midfield
  • Olivia Silvestri, senior, attack
  • Amelia Weck, senior, goalie

Position Breakdown: Senior leadership will be key because the Big Red lineup is loaded with juniors and sophomores. It will be up to a trio of core seniors: high defense Heather Artinian, a four-year varsity player, attack Olivia Silvestri (three-year player) and goalie Amelia Weck.

But there's young talent as well. Junior attack Alex Gerin is a gifted scorer.

Expectations: Gow is an icon on the sideline. She once coached Hofstra and in 1998 launched the Glen Cove girls lacrosse program, beginning with the junior varsity. She'll field a team that will battle for every goal.

"I expect us to be extremely competitive within our league,” Gow said.
