Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club

Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club members, Mayleen C. and Millie G., have been named the Youth of the Month for February.

Sixth grader Mayleen C., 11, has set her sights on attending Harvard and Yale, where she hopes to pursue a career in either the field of medicine or law. “After a conversation with my parents about college, I started to seriously think about where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do. School is very important to me,” said Mayleen. Her favorite subjects are math and science and in addition to her focus on her academic studies, she still finds time for numerous extra-curricular activities including playing basketball, taking dance and theatre classes and participating in a French Club, as well as being a member of the Boys & Girls Club. “Seeing my friends at Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club makes my day. It’s a very happy place and I’m so thankful to the staff.” Mayleen, who has been a member for almost two years, attends the Club every day.

Millie G., 13, is in the eighth grade. She is a stellar athlete and is on the track and soccer teams at school. Her favorite subject is math and she also hopes to become a doctor someday. While she absolutely plans on going to college and medical school, she’s not quite sure at this time which school she plans on attending post high school graduation. Millie attends the Club every day where her first course of business is completing homework assignments. Once done, she participates in many of the Club’s programs including a theatre and film writing workshop led by the Club’s Dance coordinator. Millie truly appreciates the new Pearson Teen Center where she has the opportunity to socialize with the many friends she has made or play sports in the adjoining gymnasium. “The Club and the Teen Center is a safe place for me and it has a really positive and healthy environment,” said Millie, who first joined the Club three years ago.
