Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club members Andrew M. and Christopher M. have been named the Youth of the Month for November.
Junior Youth of the Month, Andrew M. is seven years-old and in the second grade. He likes math and is an aspiring sculptor who envisions himself carving, shaping and molding large animal statues in his future. In addition to art, he also loves music and playing in the gym with friends. Andrew is relatively new to the Club, having joined in September of this year. He attends regularly and is very glad that he is a member of the Club. “The Club means a lot to me. Everyone is so helpful and I’m learning a lot of stuff I didn’t learn in school. I feel very comfortable here,” said Andrew. Some of Andrew’s new Club based educational experiences including learning how to make healthy snacks in the Health and Wellness Center; learning how to use a computer in the Technology Lab; and homework assistance during Power Hour in the Learning Center. Andrew hopes to attend the Club’s Summer Program at the end of the school year when he can continue to learn while having fun in the sun.
Senior Youth of the Month, Chris M. is 14 years-old and in the ninth grade. Chris is a very stylish teen who loves streetwear and hopes to become a fashion designer. Chris plans on attending College after High School to pursue a degree in Fashion. Chris is also a sports fanatic who enjoys watching basketball, soccer, football and wrestling. Chris has been a member of the Club for five years and attends every day. “I really like it here. The staff are very nice and the members are very nice,” said Chris, who can often be found playing sports in the gym or participating in activities with his friends in the Pearson Teen Center. “The Club has taught me to be respectful and considerate of others and to be better.” Chris also receives Homework help from staff and plans on enrolling in the Summer Youth Employment program when he turns 16. “I would like to work at the Club and help the younger kids the way the staff has helped me all these years.” As a designer in the making with an appreciation for style and construction, Chris has taken note of the capital improvements recently made to the facility. “The Club looks great on the outside and inside.”
