Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club

December Youth of the Month

Congratulations to GCBGC YOM.
Congratulations to GCBGC YOM.

New Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club members Frank A. and Grace Y. received an extra special gift this holiday season with the coveted title of Youth of the Month for December.

Senior Youth of the Month, Frank, 13, is in the seventh grade and has a zest for life and learning. Frank really enjoys school. “School offers me a world where I can grow, both academically and socially.” His favorite subject is math and he plans to graduate from school, attend college and maybe even go to Law School if he doesn’t become a professional soccer player. The legal profession may be ideal for Frank who wants to learn about the world, past and future. He is also a history buff and very interested in WWII, the causes that lead to war and the outbreak of war in general. Frank first joined the Club this past summer when he enrolled in the Summer program. “The Club opened a new universe for me where I am meeting new people and being exposed to new experiences, and I am learning about things I would not learn in school.” Frank attends the Club regularly and for him the most important lesson he is learning is “to be kind to your friends and never discriminate against each other.”

Junior Youth of the Month, Grace, 9, is in the fourth grade. Grace is a charming young fashionista who is fascinated by the works of Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh, and is very proud of her Korean heritage. “I used to be shy but then I came here and I’m not shy anymore,” said an outgoing Grace as she reflected on her Club experience. Like Frank, Grace is a relatively new member who recently joined the Club. “I had so much fun in the Summer program that I came back for the school year.” Grace who attends every day and gravitates towards the arts, writing and reading. She especially loves being in the Club’s Art room where she can undertake creative projects, explore different mediums and assist staff with clean up. Grace also plays the clarinet and recently took up snowboarding but Spring is still her favorite season. “I love coming to the Club. I have made many new friends here from different schools. It’s a great place where we can just be kids. We can just be ourselves and have fun.”
