Jonathan A. and Fernanda C. have been named Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Month for February.
Jonathan, who is the Junior Youth of the Month, is nine years old and in the fourth grade. Jonathan is an eager student who loves math, reading and writing. His favorite book is Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox. At this stage in his life, Jonathan is not sure what he would like to be when he grows up but he is looking forward to Middle School, High School and going to college. Jonathan is an avid soccer player who also plays the baritone in the school band, and favors Jazz music. He has been a member of the Club since the summer of first grade and is thrilled to attend every day. When at the Club, Jonathan makes sure to always complete his homework assignments before playing with his friends in the Gymnasium, the Games Room or the Technology Lab. “I really like being at the Club. I have met and made many new friends from different schools. This place means a lot to me. Everyone is nice, we all help each other and respect each other. Someday, I hope I can work here,” said Jonathan.
Fernanda C. 13, is the Senior Youth of the Month. She is currently in the eighth grade and math is her favorite subject. Fernanda has an entrepreneurial spirit with aspirations to become a self-employed Interior Designer. She has a love for languages and speaks Spanish fluently, works on developing her English every day and soon plans on taking up Portuguese. A natural born athlete, Fernanda has a passion for swimming and dancing as well as playing basketball, volleyball and soccer. She attends the Club twice a week and credits the Club for helping her with her English skills. “I did not speak English when I first came here and the Club helped me to feel comfortable and helped improve my English,” said Fernanda. “When I moved here, I had to start a new life with no friends and I felt very overwhelmed. Then I came here where I was welcomed and became more confident. The staff always makes me feel happy and encourages me to try new things. I have made a lot of friends and without the Club, I would feel very lonely.”
