Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club April Youth of the Month

Darya B. and Dillon S. were named Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Month for April.

Darya B., 8, a third grader at Landing Elementary School who aspires to be a Pediatrician when she grows up. “I want to be able to help others and doctors save lives every day. That's what I would like to do too when I grow up,” said Darya, whose favorite subjects in school are math and science. She has been a Club member for a little over a year and is working hard on sharpening her math skills through the Club’s One-on-One Tutoring program where she is receiving extra help from staff and Club volunteer Mr. Ali (Haidery), a student at New York Institute of Technology. Darya, a fashionista at heart who loves to wear dresses, also actively engages in the Club’s Dance program and is currently learning Hip Hop. In addition to her schoolwork and Dance, Darya participates in gymnastics, likes spending time in the Technology Lab and enjoys meeting and making new friends at the Club. She has established a very special relationship with Group Leader Ms. Brianna (Anaya) who is her friend and confidante. "The staff always makes me feel special. I am very excited and happy to come to the Club and I'm thankful for opportunities they are giving me.”

Dillon S., 13, an eighth grader at Robert M. Finley Middle School, excels at math. He is an avid and adept video game player who hopes to pursue a career in the gaming industry someday. While he has been a regular member of the Club for the past eight years, he is finding this year to be extra special for him now that he is in the Teen Program. Dillon is truly relishing the Teen experience where he is finding a little more freedom and the ability to play an active role in contributing to the program and agenda. In fact, Dillon was instrumental in spearheading the teens’ activities during Spring Break week, including planning trips to Bounce and Dave and Busters. Dillon likes sports but has found a true calling for Golf after participating in the Club’s Golf Program. He has the precision and range needed to master the game. The Club and the programs offered mean a great deal to Dillon who said, “I've definitely matured and grown since I have been coming to the Club. The staff has helped me overcome my shyness and become more social. They also provide a sense of security for me.”

Congratulations to Darya and Dillon, Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club April Youth of the Month.
