Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club January Youth of the Month

Maria R. and Saul M. have been named January Youth of the Month.

The New Year is starting out better than expected for Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club January Youth of the Month, Maria R. and Saul M.

Senior Youth of the Month, Maria R., joined the Club in October. She is 13 years old and in the eighth grade. Her favorite subjects are social studies, science and digital media. “I’m planning on going to college and pursuing a career in medicine,” said Maria, who has many relatives working in the medical field. “Family means a lot to me. I have 48 cousins and when I’m not at school or at the Club, I’m visiting and spending time with family. The Club too has become an extension of her family for Maria. “Ever since I joined the Club, I feel like I have a sense of belonging and a place where I can just be myself and be happy. It’s a very positive atmosphere and I also feel a sense of responsibility to be good,” said Maria. In addition to her involvement in Teen based programs that take place in the David P. Pearson Teen Center, Maria has been making music in the Club’s recording studio and becoming more physically active by participating in sports in the gymnasium. “Now I’m looking forward to joining the school track team and volleyball team.” Maria, who would like to work as a group leader at the Club someday, is already getting a head start by volunteering her time helping staff with younger members.

Junior Youth of the Month, Saul M., is seven years old and in the second grade. Saul is an active young sportsman who enjoys playing soccer, basketball and football. He also likes painting and drawing and exploring his artistic talents. His father, who is a police officer, is his hero. “I want to become a police officer just like my dad when I grow up because I want to help people, and I really like the uniform,” said Saul, who is a relatively new to the Club experience. “My brother, Leybis, comes here and I wanted to come here too.” Since joining the Club in September, Saul regularly participates in Power Hour, a homework help program, and is seeing an improvement in his grades. He also engages in programs in the Technology Lab and the Learning Center where he can often be found reading one of his favorite Dr. Seuss books. After he completes his homework and reading Saul heads to the Club gymnasium where he gets to play sports with his friends. “I really like the Club. I’ve made so many friends and I’m having a lot of fun here,” said Saul before adding “I’m so excited about being the Youth of the Month. My mom is going to be so happy.”
