Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Names May Youth of the Month

Julissa V. and Abdiel O. have been named Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club's YOM for May for their outstanding conduct and positive attitude.

Julissa, 9, is in the third grade at Gribbin Elementary school and excels in math and science and loves art, gym and reading. She likes to help people and hopes to become a doctor someday. Julissa is a relative newcomer to the Club, having been a member for a year. During this time, she has been a stellar member of the Club and a great role model to her friends and peers. Julissa attends every day and takes advantage of the Club’s Power Hour program where she is able to get homework assistance and help with improving her language skills. “The Club and the staff have really helped me with my English,” said Julissa, who also likes to participate in the Cooking Up Energy program and events that take place in the Learning Center, as well as the Summer Program and the fun and exciting field trips that are part of the program. When not at the Club, Julissa enjoys spending time with her siblings and her family.

Abdiel, 13, is in the seventh grade at Robert M. Finley Middle School. This is Abdiel’s second time being named Youth of the Month, having been previously selected in 2014 at the age of nine. He has been a member of the Club since he was eight and has attended regularly ever since he joined. Abdiel’s interests have remained very consistent over the past years with his favorite subject still being math. While Soccer continues to be his favorite sport he now enjoys playing football and basketball too. In addition to sports, Abdiel plays the trumpet and is in the Glen Cove Marching Band. He and his Band mates recently participated in Glen Cove’s Memorial Day Parade and the celebration of the Parade’s 350th Anniversary. Abdiel has made many friends at the Club and is very close to staff. As a teen member he has become an active Club volunteer and can often be found helping staff or working with the younger kids on STEM projects. “The Club is like home to me, I appreciate being here. I have a lot of friends here and I enjoy spending time with them,” said Abdiel, who also volunteers at his Church.

Congratulations to Julissa and Abdiel.
