Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Month
Mia B. and Melton F. have been named Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Month for May.

Mia is six years old and in the first grade. She is very enthusiastic and has a positive attitude and passion for learning. Her favorite subject is math but she also enjoys studying astronomy, the planets and the stars in the solar systems as well as reading Katie Woo books. She loves her teacher and wants to follow in her educator’s footsteps by becoming a teacher herself when she grows up. This is Mia’s first year as a member of the Club and she is already taking advantage of academic programs including Power Hour where she receives homework help and support. “I learn something new here every day,” said Mia who attends regularly. She is looking forward to participating in the Club’s Summer Program where she can continue to learn and have fun with her friends. When not at the Club, Mia can be found playing softball, helping at home with her baby sister or baking cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies.
Melton F., 15, is in the eighth grade. Melton is a sports fanatic but his favorite sport is basketball. He has his sights set on California where he would like to attend and play college basketball for UCLA before going professional with the LA Lakers. He is currently playing basketball with the AAU (Amateur Athletics Union) and at the Club. He is also a relatively new member, having enrolled as a teen member after visiting the Club with his friends. “I really liked it here so I joined and now I am here most days,” said Melton, who is actively engaged in the Teen Program. “I get to socialize with my friends in a safe and well supervised environment. This Club provides supervised freedom but they really encourage us to work harder, do better while keeping us out of trouble. The staff are great and they treat us with respect.,” said Melton, who always makes himself available to group leaders and supervisors in helping with the younger members. He hopes to become a member of the leadership group and work at the Club after he turns 16. “I really want to participate in the Summer Youth Employment program and become a group leader,” said Melton.
Congratulations to Mia and Melton.
