Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Summer

Isaiah J. and Zulma A. have been named Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club's Youth of the Summer.

Isaiah and Zulma demonstrated outstanding conduct, enthusiasm for the Club and respect for their peers during the course of the six-week summer program.

Isaiah, 7, will be going into the third grade in September. His favorite subject is math but he also likes learning new words and word study. Isaiah would like to become a firefighter when he grows up. “I like to help others and I would like to become a firefighter to help keep people safe,” said Isaiah, who has been a member of the Club for a year and a half. He attends the Club regularly and enjoys participating in all the programs. He really likes all the group leaders but has established a special relationship with Ms. Lyasia (Milledge) who is always happy to see him. “Ms. Lyasia is very respectful and considerate to the members. She’s always kind and helpful.” Isaiah had a great time in the Club’s Summer Program and the numerous field trips the program offered. “I had a lot of fun making new friends with other members and with new staff. I had a great time just being here. It’s a very special place.”

Zulma, 12, just finished the sixth grade at Robert M. Finley Middle School and is looking forward to attending the seventh grade in September. Her favorite subjects are social studies and math and she hopes to become an English teacher when she grows up. Zulma loves to teach others and also loves to read, especially anything relating to history. Zulma is new to the Club and this is her first summer and first experience as a member. “I had a lot of fun and felt very comfortable even though my English is not great,” said Zulma. “I didn’t expect to walk into an environment that is filled with so much love,” she added. “The other kids really made me feel welcome and always helped and supported me. There is real love and caring in this building. That is something I will always remember,” said Zulma who especially credits Mr. Sean (O’Callaghan), Education Director, with always making her feel included. Zulma was very excited to be named Youth of the Summer and is looking forward to continuing the Club in the Fall.
