Glen Cove to Hold Howard Davis Jr. Tribute

The community is invited to attend a special “Celebration of Life” tribute to honor boxing legend Howard Davis Jr. on Saturday in Glen Cove.

The 59-year-old Glen Cove native was a 1976 Olympic gold medalist. After learning of his diagnosis in February, Davis was inspired to “clobber cancer” through his charity, the Howard Davis Jr. Foundation. He died Wednesday, Dec. 30 at his Florida home.

“Howard stands tall in the history of our City,” Mayor Reggie Spinello said in a press release. “He will always be remembered as a champion, a gentleman, and the greatest amateur boxer.”

Members of the community will celebrate the life of Davis from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club, located at 113 Glen St..

The tribute will feature guest speakers, including family members, friends, representatives of the boxing community and local dignitaries.

Refreshments will be served.

Following the tribute, a reception sponsored by the Glen Cove Housing Authority will be held from 1-3 p.m. at The View Grill, located at 111 Lattingtown Road.
