Valedictorian: Alison Abrams

From the first day she walked into , Alison Abrams has been actively involved in a wide range of school clubs and organizations while upholding a stellar academic average, accomplishments which have led her to become the Class of 2012 Valedictorian.

 “Alison possesses sophisticated intellectual prowess and is an extraordinarily adept student,” said Glen Cove Coordinator of PPS Mike Tweed. “She self-challenges. Some students falter under pressure; Alison thrives.” 

As the top-ranked student in the Class of 2012, Alison has challenged herself and succeeded academically. A four-year member of the Principal’s High Honor Roll and a member of the National Honor Society since her junior year, Alison was a top scorer in the American Mathematics Corporation Exam and the DECA Marketing Math Exam last year and has received awards for excellence in AP Calculus, Math B Honors and chemistry to go with a Bausch and Lomb Honorary Junior Science Award.

Yet there may be no better indication of someone who loves the pressure and responsibility than the leadership roles Alison has accepted throughout her high school career, including serving as student government vice president since the ninth grade. Community service and activism for good causes are high on her list, having been a member of the Fight World Hunger Club and a peer tutor, assembling care packages for soldiers, participating in Relay for Life and caroling for AHRC. She has successfully blended her love for mathematics, entrepreneurship and service through her work with DECA, serving as chairperson in her junior year and parliamentarian in her senior year.

Alison, who is a four-year member of the symphonic, jazz and pep/marching bands, served as vice president of the symphonic band, which performed at Lincoln Center. She also served as director of the student pep/marching band, conducting in the 2011 Veteran’s Day Parade in New York City and performing at football games and the annual City of . In addition, she performed on piano at the NYSSMA Festival this year and was inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Rounding out Alison’s resume is an impressive athletic career, including four years of girls lacrosse, achieving a varsity letter and a starting spot in her junior year. She also captained both the girls soccer team and girls basketball team in her sophomore year, the latter for which she achieved a varsity letter and made the varsity squad as a junior, and co-captained varsity cross-country as a senior.

“Alison has been at the starting gate for the past four years,”  remarked Mr. Tweed. “She has been waiting for this time when she can sprint off to college.”

Alison will attend Bentley College this fall to study mathematics.
