Landing Students Showcase Knowledge Of Brazil
Third graders recently partook in the Communities Around the World project and learned about Brazilian culture and issues.

GLEN COVE, NY--Landing Elementary School third graders in the Glen Cove City School District recently learned about Brazil after participating in the Communities Around the World Project. Students discovered Brazilian culture, as well as the political, social and economic components that define the South American country.
The kids read a couple of articles from the National Geographic Ladders Social Studies series "Welcome to Brazil." The readings groups worked together to take notes from "Into the Rain Forest" by David Holford and "Let's Go to Carnival" by Hugh Westrup. That new knowledge culminated in them constructing posters detailing important facts, animals, celebrations, traditions and landmarks in Brazilian culture. They also designed Carnival masks.
The children then shared their projects with each other and watched a video about carnival celebrations around the world. They managed to compare and contrast the different celebrations and make a common connection to communities around the world. The main take-away was that humans may come from different backgrounds and cultures, but we're all part of the same human race.
