NORTH SHORE, NEW YORK – Assemblymember Charles Lavine (D-North Shore) has issued the following statement in response to former President Donald Trump’s disparaging social media post regarding a member of the staff of the judge deciding a $250 million civil fraud case against him:

Targeting court employees for character assassination is vile and treacherous. As Chair of the New York State Assembly Judiciary Committee, I condemn this barbaric tactic.

While judges and court personnel are hesitant to speak out against such repugnant conduct, I am neither a judge nor a court employee. As the Chair of a respected legislative committee, I have legislative responsibility for the courts of our state and their workers. I will not remain silent when judicial employees are threatened.

It is significant to note that New York State alone has nearly 20,000 court employees and our Federal court system employs 30,000 workers.

As one who was privileged to practice law in both our State and Federal Courts, I do not hesitate to affirm that an attack against any court employee is an attack against each of us who respect and honor the rule of law and justice.

It would be wise for anyone who might think of engaging in such abhorrent conduct to give this analysis the full consideration that it warrants.

Assemblymember Charles Lavine represents New York’s 13th Assembly District in Nassau County. He presently serves as Chair of the Judiciary Committee and is a member of the Committees on Codes, Ethics and Guidance, Insurance, and Rules.
