Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton Community Grants Support Children and Seniors

The Glen Cove Senior Center has been warm and cozy this winter and the Youth Bureau's After 3 students are making great use of their iPads.

For the past six years, the Glen Cove Youth Bureau has offered Glen Cove After 3, an afterschool and summer enrichment program encompassing four elementary schools and one middle school. This program helps to strengthen students academically, socially and emotionally as they progress through middle and high school.

Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton was very pleased to be able to grant the Youth Bureau’s request for iPads that now enable students to work on homework and special projects, as well as access the Internet for information and educational websites. They also use the iPads to create presentations, short videos and to expand their use and knowledge of technology.

The Glen Cove Senior Center is an active, vibrant place where members meet to take classes, enrich their minds, enjoy nutritious meals and meet their friends. While the facility is in very good condition with many rooms for various activities, the boiler needed replacing.

Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton worked with Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello to combine resources and funds with which to have a new boiler purchased and installed just as winter was starting. This ensured the senior citizen members would be warm and cozy in their “second home” during the winter months.

“It is such a pleasure to know my office can help fund such important initiatives, especially those that help to improve the lives of children and senior citizens,” Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton said. “My aides and I are always eager to pursue worthwhile projects that the County’s grant program funding can support.”
