Long Island Assemblyman Introduces Bill to Make Apple Crumb Pie NY's Official Pie
The dessert's crumbly toppings make it a more "ambitious" dessert than regular apple pie, the lawmaker wrote.

Glen Cove Assemblyman Charles Lavine is addressing the real issues.
He believes New York is ready to make apple crumb pie the state’s official pie.
Why apple crumb pie? Unlike classic apple pie, the crumbly toppings on apple crumb pie make it a more “ambitious” dessert, Lavine wrote in the bill memo in late August.

“Apple Crumb Pie brings the classic apple pie up to the next level,” Lavine wrote.
It’s a perfect fit, he believes, considering New York is the country’s second-largest apple producer, with approximately 694 commercial apple growers that produce an average of 29.5 million bushels annually, according to the New York Apple Association.

The economic and social impact of the apple in New York is “reason enough” to name apple crumb pie the state’s official pie, according to Lavine.
Lavine wrote: “No dessert is more fitting for New York State than a pie that strives to be even better. The apple crumb pie characterizes the New York citizens who are constantly creating and innovating to make what is great, even greater.”
Lavine, a democrat, believes the slice of pie deserving of representing the state is the apple crumb pie made by Rob Brigati, the chief baker at White Post Farms in Melville. The farm’s apple crumb pie was named “Best in America” after it won an award at the American Pie Council’s National Pie Championship in 2015.
The bill does not currently have a state sponsor, Newsday reports.
