The Mayor's Wife Speaks Out

A letter to the editor by Coleen Spinello.

By Coleen Spinello

Anyone living in Glen Cove is well aware that since this Mayoral campaign began in the early spring we have been subjected to negative, angry and false advertising in the media by Tony Gallo and his team. I have pretended that it doesn’t bother me and try to accept that this is just dirty politics from the “Glen Cove United Party” but based on recent mailings I cannot pretend any longer. I am appalled that councilman Tony Gallo who teachers at our local school and try’s to present himself as a role model to our children condones this type of negative behavior and messaging in the electoral process. In these sensitive times, how could he think that it is o.k. to depict the mayor in front of our own city hall burning to the ground? It is in no way clever, acceptable or funny. It is distasteful and disgusting. It was also disgusting when Mr. Gallo sent out literature accusing my husband of supporting the dissection of aborted fetuses for profit. This is not an acceptable way to campaign. Will he teach his daughter and nephews and students that it’s o.k. to lie and deceive for the sake of victory?

Tony Gallo’s run for mayor is based on betrayal, lies and is void of any platform for positive change. If Mr. Gallo had any respect for the election process and the residents of Glen Cove, he should have gotten involved in city issues when he was elected to city council four years ago. Not once did he call the mayor’s office and show interest or concern. He has only shown interest in promoting himself…not because he has a great plan for improving our city; only because he decided that he wants to be mayor. He has no managerial experience that I know of, let alone experience in negotiating contracts, municipal law or finance. Any time he speaks at meeting he appears to be reading from texts being sent from his team who are telling him what to say.

If he truly believed in creating his own party to run for mayor; why did he insist on running a primary election that forced the campaign season to begin early in the spring littering our lawns with those unsightly signs and costing us taxpayers a lot of time and money with a primary election? His platform for the primary was that he was the “only true republican”. When he lost the primary, he stated that party support doesn’t matter. Well, which is true? What does he stand for? He changes his mind whenever he gets a conflicting opinion from a potential voter.

My husband, Mayor Reginald Spinello has made so much progress in such a short time in office. He has made many positive and beneficial changes throughout our entire community. For that to happen you need someone who is strong and not afraid to stand up and do what he feels is right for the city regardless of the political consequences. He is passionate about improving our quality of life here. I’m very proud of the honest, good work Reggie does for this great city. He has a flair for management with a win-win result. He especially enjoys going into the schools and talking with the students. Reggie feels that Glen Cove has a good school system and wants to help improve its image. He is very proud of all of the city workers including our awesome first responders. Reg has initiated so many great programs to move Glen Cove forward and wants to keep this momentum going. He loves his position as mayor and it shows…he is good at it. Let’s keep things positive…Please re-elect my husband, Mayor Reggie Spinello. Thank you
