MTA: In Event of LIRR Strike, Ferry Service From Glen Cove

In the event of a Long Island Rail Road strike, the Metropolitan Transit Authority has announced that ferry service from Glen Cove to Manhattan’s East Side will be part of its contingency plan.

That contingency plan also encourages commuters to telecommute if possible. The MTA will also be offering shuttle bus services to subway stations, which is considered to be a last resort, and is also setting up park and ride lots for carpooling. 

As for those who would consider traveling by ferry, the MTA will provide ferry service between Glen Cove and E 34th Street, midtown in Manhattan, according to the MTA website. Passengers’ LIRR tickets will be honored, and must be shown before boarding.

According to the MTA, Seastreak Ferry will provide the ferry service, which will run from Glen Cove in the morning, and from East 34 Street in the evening.

The ferry can hold a maximum of 500 seats, and tickets will be honored on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Parking is limited in the area, so passengers are urged to carpool or get rides to and from the ferry.  Once in Manhattan, passengers can pick up the M34 bus from the East 34 Street dock.
