Vinnie Martinez to be Commemorated at Vinnie’s Island

Glen Cove, NY – September 2024 – Vincent "Vinnie" Martinez, Sr., a U.S. Navy veteran and beloved member of the Glen Cove community, will soon be honored with a commemorative stone and plaque at Vinnie’s Island, a green space he personally transformed over four decades ago. The commemoration, sponsored, organized, and paid for through a collaborative effort between Glen Cove American Legion Post 76 and the Tribute and Honor Foundation, is set to recognize Vinnie’s 40 years of service in beautifying Glen Cove.

A motion allowing the stone and plaque to be placed at Vinnie’s Island was presented by Mayor Pam Panzenbeck and unanimously approved at this past Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. The resolution, introduced by the mayor, underscored the significance of Vinnie’s contributions to the city. The honor was officially announced during a joint meeting between the post and the foundation at Glen Cove City Hall this past Wednesday afternoon.

According to Adjutant Anthony Anzalone of Glen Cove American Legion Post 76 and Gaitley Stevenson-Mathews, President of the Tribute and Honor Foundation, the cost of the memorial will be shared equally by both organizations. However, two anonymous donors have graciously agreed to underwrite the American Legion’s portion of the expenses. “We felt it was important to work in tandem with the Glen Cove American Legion Post 76 and have them take the lead in organizing the event. We could not be more pleased that this project will be completed at no cost to the city, veterans, or the Post,” said Stevenson-Mathews.

Anthony Anzalone expressed the Post’s enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “When the Tribute and Honor Foundation approached us, we knew this was something we wanted to be part of. Vinnie’s commitment to Glen Cove is unmatched, and this tribute is a testament to his service both as a veteran and a community leader.”

Mayor Pam Panzenbeck added, "Vinnie is a cherished member of our community whose work has touched the lives of countless people in Glen Cove. His contributions over the past 40 years have not only beautified our city but also strengthened the sense of community. I could not be more pleased that the American Legion Post 76 and the Foundation have come together to honor his dedication, providing an opportunity for all of us to reflect on his impact and commitment to our community."

The dedication ceremony will be held at Vinnie’s Island, located at the intersection of School Street, North Lane, and Brewster Street, on Saturday, November 9th, at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend. The plaque will read:

About Vincent "Vinnie" Martinez, Sr.
Vincent (Vinnie) Martinez, Sr., a U.S. Navy veteran and recipient of the Tribute and Honor Foundation’s Legacy Award presented at the foundation's 2023 Awards Ceremony and Fundraising Gala, served in the Korean War and has been a dedicated community volunteer for over 50 years. In 1984, Vinnie transformed a small intersection in Glen Cove into what is now known as "Vinnie’s Island," a vibrant green space that continues to beautify the city. He has been recognized with numerous awards for his service, including Fireman of the Year, the American Legion Certificate of Honor, and the Tribute and Honor Foundation's Legacy Award. Vinnie currently serves as Commander of Glen Cove American Legion Post 76.
