• Great Neck fire department pays $460G more after insurer drops it (newsday.com) — Vigilant Engine & Hook & Ladder, which serves much of the Great Neck peninsula, is paying about $460,000 more for insurance this year after being dropped by its longtime carrier. The jump from $205,000 to $665,000 is partly offset by North Hempstead, which plans a modest funding increase using reserve funds so residents’ fire and EMS coverage isn’t disrupted.    

• 21 Long Island students win first place at science competition (newsday.com) — Students from Great Neck South High School have earned a spot at the national Science Olympiad after a strong second-place finish at the New York State competition, building on a regional win earlier this year. They’re joined by other standout Long Island students headed to major science fairs, showcasing impressive STEM talent from Great Neck and neighboring districts.
