Derma Filler Can Now Be Used for Acne Scars

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the usage of a derma filler to treat acne scars.

Acne scars occur after a blemish has been popped or affected and sometimes look like a slight indent into the skin. The FDA-approved derma filler Bellafill would be used to prop up the skin underneath the scar to help raise it.

Homayoun Sasson, MD, director of plastic surgery at Plainview Hospital and Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream, says the derma filler can be a good option but people should consider that the derma filler will cause that part of the skin to not react the same way as the rest of the face. For example, when skin droops with age, derma-filled skin will not.

There are other options besides derma fillers to treat acne scars.

“I think some people who have a few acne scars just get by with them with makeup or other conservative ways,” Dr. Sasson says. “Traditionally and still, we treat acne scars with acid peels or laser treatment or what we call derm abrasion, which is sandblasting of the skin. They all pretty much act along the same lines removing a top layer of the skin, where the acne scars are, and encouraging the skin to regenerate itself.”
