A New York physical medicine and rehabilitation physician says the U.S. robotic exoskeleton suit approved by the Food and Drug Administration will give paraplegics another tool to be more mobile.
“It’s a functional tool; it allows people who can’t walk to walk,” says Adam Stein, MD, director of physical medicine and rehabilitation for the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “Many people have said it’s like an Iron Man suit so to speak and there are some parallels there.”
The ReWalk Robotics system involves motion sensors and the user generates a movement that will then be interpreted by the machine.
The device is currently not able to be used by quadriplegics, but Stein says he wouldn’t be surprised to see new technology with a wider range of uses.
