GNWPCD Welcomes Hofstra University Students

District Teaches Local Students Environmental Importance of Wastewater Treatment

The Great Neck Water Pollution Control District (GNWPCD) recently welcomed a group of Hofstra University environmental science students to its East Shore Road facility. As part of their academic curriculum, the students got to take a tour of one of the most environmentally conscious wastewater treatment plants in the Northeast.

District Superintendent Christopher Murray shared a detailed account of the District’s ongoing eco-friendly projects and lead students on a tour of the plant. Students were especially interested in the District’s ultraviolet disinfection system, anaerobic digesters, micro turbine systems and a recently completed oxidation ditch.

Students studied the sewer treatment plant with an eye towards promoting similar systems throughout the rest of Long Island and the country.
