The news that the Mississippi baby who was previously thought to be HIV free and has recently gone into remission shows that her treatment could hold off HIV for nearly two years, a New York HIV physician says.
“We did find out that HIV can be held in basically this latent, non-productive phase where the virus can’t be detected for 22 odd months, where usually before, HIV replicates and is detectable within weeks,” says David Rosenthal, DO, medical director of the Center for Young Adult, Adolescent and Pediatric HIV at the North Shore-LIJ Health System.
Dr. Rosenthal thinks that physicians and researchers need to expand on what they have learned in this case and continue to try to find a cure for HIV.
“I’m still hopeful this kind of approach can be helpful for us in the future but we’re going to have to see what happens,” Dr. Rosenthal says.
