Spinal Stenosis Ends David Wilson's NFL Career

A New York Orthopedist says David Wilson had to end his NFL career because his spinal stenosis and the further narrowing of his spinal canal left him at risk for future injuries.

“There are different forms of spinal stenosis,” says David A. Essig, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “While some people develop it over time, with the aging of the spine, David Wilson suffers from congenital stenosis, which is when you are born with spinal stenosis.”

Treatment for spinal stenosis depends on the patients’ symptoms, and often starts with different conservative methods, including the use of anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, some types of various injections, and, for very symptomatic cases, surgery.

Dr. Essig noted that there are no preventative measures available to prevent spinal stenosis.
