Stroke Prevention Tips

One of the most interesting findings of a recent study showing the number of deaths after a stroke has decreased in the last 20 years was that the incidence of deaths in the African American population has gone down a lot in this timeframe, says a New York neurologist.

Rohan Arora, MD, physician in the vascular neurology stroke center at the Cushing Neuroscience Institute, which is part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, says the reason for the decline in deaths after strokes during this time, particularly in the African American population, was better efforts to control high blood pressure and increased patient education. Some of the things people can do to prevent a stroke are:
·         Keep your blood pressure below 120/80
·         Maintain a good blood glucose level if you have diabetes
·         Have a healthy diet

For those who have had a stroke, it is critical that you maintain a healthy lifestyle because, “This population is immediately at higher risk of a stroke just because they had the first stroke,” Dr. Arora says.
