Troop 10 of Great Neck, NY recently completed an overnight camping trip in western New Jersey. The weather was a rather pleasant November Saturday. It was sunny and cool, during the rock climbing activity, and although warned that night about incoming weather, it was still a challenge waking up to 2-3 inches of snow. On arrival in the morning, the 16 scouts set up camp including their tents and tarpaulins because, at that time, rain was predicted for the evening or the night. After lunch, they began their afternoon activity. The scouts and some of the adult leaders were instructed by rappelling experts in the proper use of the helmet and the harness, and the technique for belaying. The scouts and leaders were able to ascend two separate paths up a 60-foot vertical rock face. This was not that easy. They returned to the campsite and the patrols cooked dinner. Dinners included beef tacos and pasta with meatballs and salad. The adults had wings for appetizers then steak and roasted Brussel sprouts and new potatoes. A Dutch oven Black Forest cake was a delicious dessert. The scouts had campfire and s’mores. The temperature dropped and they went to bed. Despite the warning, it was still a surprise to see snow outside and good to knock it off the tent from the inside. It was cold but above freezing. The scouts and adults cooked and ate hearty breakfasts, struck camp and got home by lunchtime.
