Your Colonoscopy: What to Expect

Here's what you should know about a colonoscopy.

A lot of folks postpone their colonoscopy, but that’s a bad idea. This screening can make all the difference, considering that colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in the US. Many studies have proven that colonoscopies save lives.

Perhaps you’re procrastinating because you think it will be painful. Maybe you’ve heard that the colonoscopy prep is uncomfortable. It’s normal to be wary of the unknown. So let’s explain things a little:

What is a colonoscopy? A colonoscopy is a safe, effective way to examine the lining of the colon and the rectum with a long, thin, flexible instrument. Physicians use the procedure to diagnose colon and rectum problems, perform biopsies and remove colon polyps. Removing precancerous polyps helps prevent colorectal cancer from developing. Colonoscopies are more accurate than an X-ray in detecting polyps and early stages of cancer.

Is a colonoscopy painful? Honestly, a colonoscopy is painless--especially when performed with the assistance of an anesthesiologist. You don’t feel a thing, have a nice sleep, then it’s over. That’s it!

What about the prep? Today’s colonoscopy preps are much better than earlier versions. There’s less to drink and it tastes better. You will want to stay close to a bathroom, but it’s not so bad. The prep clears stool from the intestine so your doctor can see your intestinal lining clearly.

Don’t Put Off Your Colonoscopy

  • If you’re middle-aged, don’t put it off! Everyone 50 and older--45 and older for African-Americans--should undergo a screening colonoscopy.
  • If colon cancer or polyps run in your family, you may need an exam earlier. Don’t put it off!
  • If you experience rectal bleeding or a change in bowels movements, don’t put it off!
  • If you’re “too busy,” don’t put it off! Certainly you can schedule a screening that can give you more time in the long run.

So please schedule your colonoscopy. It could be the best call you’ve ever made!
