Drunken Driver Arrested Following 3-Vehicle Melville Crash: Police

A Huntington Station man was arrested for DWI after he was involved in a three-vehicle crash that left four people were hurt, one critically, in Melville on Friday night, police say.

According to authorities, Alvarado Barrios-Martinez, 26, was driving a 1996 Honda Accord northbound on Route 110 when he struck a 2014 Subaru Outback that was stopped at the red light near Arrowood Lane at 8:45 p.m. The Subaru was forced into a 2016 BMW X3 that was also stopped at the red light, police say.

A man was transported to Huntington Hospital in critical condition with a head injury while a woman was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Huntington Hospital. Both were passengers in the Honda, police say.

Overall, four people were transported to Huntington and Plainview hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

Barrios-Martinez was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He will be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.

All vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.

The Melville Fire Department responded to the scene with an engine, two ambulances, paramedic, first responder and fire police units. All units were under the direction of Chief Jason Bernfeld and Assistant Chiefs David Kaplan and Bill Schmitt.

The Dix Hills and Plainview fire departments also assisted with additional ambulances.
