Dix Hills Fire Department Commissioner Phil Tepe said, "We have a little over 1,000 hydrants in Dix Hills and have taken on the expense of putting flags on them so we know where they are hiding from us in weather like this!"
He added, "A little after midnight the other night, Huntington Manor had a working fire off West 11th Street and establishing a positive water source took a little extra time as we needed to locate the hydrant and then dig it out first. Then the same day, before lunch, Melville had a fire on Evergreen and again the hydrant needed to be located and dug out prior to being used."
Tepe asks all Dix Hillians, "Could you please ask your readers to adopt a hydrant and make sure that the two nearest hydrants to their house are free and clear in case of an emergency?"

He added, "With more snow continually arriving, I will be talking to the other commissioners about putting crews out to clear hydrants. As you can see, under the best of circumstances it's going to take a lot of time to do them all, so any help from our residents will be greatly appreciated!
