DHFD: Please Help Keep Fire Hydrants Clear During Snowstorms

The Dix Hills Fire Department would like to
remind homeowners and local business owners to make
sure they keep areas surrounding fire hydrants clear
so that firefighters can connect their equipment
without delays.

This winter’s storms have brought
more than three feet of snow that can obstruct fire
hydrants and the surrounding areas and fire hydrant
accessibility is a primary factor in fighting fires
successfully.

“We are asking residents and business owners to
please remember to keep fire hydrants clear of snow
this winter,” explained Chairman of the Board for the DHFD, Larry Feld. “By taking a few minutes to dig out any
hydrants in your area, you are helping our
firefighters perform lifesaving work without delays
to ensure your safety and that of others.”

It is estimated that there are approximately 100,000
fire hydrants throughout Long Island.
