Colts Run, Sprint, Jump Past Copiague
The Hills West boys track and field team beats Copiague 82-58 to move to 3-0 on the season.
The boys track and field team increased its undefeated dual meet record to 3-0 with a dominant 82-58 win over Copiague last Wednesday.
The Colts lost only the shot put, high jump and discus throw en route to the victory.
“[We had] good, all around competitive efforts,” coach Jim Christian said. “Seniors took care of business and the younger guys are starting to step up, run some really nice times. They want to be part of the team.”

The Colts most impressive performance may have come in the 1,600 meter run, where the team’s scoring runners placed in first, third, fourth, and fifth, led by Anthony De Matteo’s time of 4:31. De Matteo also finished first in the 3,200 meter with a time of 10:24 and was a crucial leg of the 4 x 400 meter relay.
“It felt easy,” De Matteo said. “My goal was just to go out in front of everyone and stay ahead.”

“He’s been doing a great job for us this year so far,” Christian said of De Matteo. “So far, he’s sort of been our MVP because our sprints are strong and everybody expects us to do well and they expect to do well in the distances against us and he’s won every race he’s been in so far this year.”
Abdias Mrytil won the 200 meter in 22.2 seconds and also won the long jump, while Dan McCord won the 100 meter in just more than 11 seconds. Kyle Sammis won the 800 meter in 2:01 and Justin Ma won the 400 meter in 50.9 seconds.
“[I had] the same strategy as usual,” Ma said. “Pretend like we all start the same. Try to catch them as soon as possible and, once I’ve got them, slingshot off the curve and see what I’ve got left.”
The Colts have three dual meets remaining against Riverhead, Bellport and West Babylon.
“We’re in Division II, which we’re capable of winning,” Christian said. “Hopefully we’ll have guys qualify for states and nationals also.”
