Dix Hills FD Honored for Saving Mikey the Horse

The Dix Hills Fire Department was recently recognized by the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for their lifesaving actions in rescuing a horse trapped in an icy swimming pool. 

Mikey the horse became trapped in the pool after he and two other horses escaped from a Dix Hills stable on January 20. 

Mikey found his way to the rear of a home on Carlls Straight Path, where he fell through the ice encrusted pool cover and into the freezing pool. 

A rescue operation began as Dix Hills volunteer firefighters were assisted by the Commack and Huntington Manor fire departments' technical rescue teams, and Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau and Emergency Service in successfully rescuing and saving Mikey. 

Suffolk County SPCA officials presented Certificates of Commendation to the Dix Hills Fire Department and firefighters Kris Tillis and Kevin Chadjrian, who entered the pool to place a fire hose under the horse to assist in hoisting it to safety. 

They were successful but both firefighters suffered hypothermia and were transported to Huntington Hospital, where they were treated and released.
