The Dix Hills Fire Department Open House event scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled due to the impending storm.

The department is making preparations and members will be ready to handle any emergencies that may occur.

The entire family is invited to watch the professionals at work and to find out what to do during a fire during the Dix Hills Fire Department Open House on Sunday.

“Open House is our most popular and well attended community event and it kicks off National Fire Prevention week,” said Chief Robert Fling, event chairman.

Open House will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dix Hills Fire Headquarters, located at 115 East Deer Park Road.

Attendees will have to opportunity to:

  • See firefighting and rescue demonstrations.
  • See safety exercises including stop, drop and roll, first aid and emergency treatment tips.
  • Learn about Dix Hills Fire Department safety and assistance programs including the Child Safety Car Seat program and free Community CPR courses.
  • Get a free blood pressure checks.
  • Learn how to operate a real fire hose.
  • Watch Dix Hills volunteer firefighters battle a car fire and use the “Jaws of Life” heavy rescue tools to pry open a wrecked car.
  • Get tours of the firehouse, ambulances and fire trucks.
  • Grab a bunch of free giveaways that will be handed out all day.

“Nearly one thousand people pass through the firehouse,” Fling said. “That kind of support from the community is fantastic. Everyone should know the skills we teach regardless of ages.”
