Dix Hills Fire Department Open House Draws Crowds

Sunday's event kicks off National Fire Prevention Week.

Nearly 800 people attended the Dix Hills Fire Department annual open house Sunday.

“Open house is our most popular and well-attended community event, and it kicks off National Fire Prevention Week,” said Chief Robert Fling.

Visitors saw volunteer firefighters and EMS crews in action, battling an actual car fire and using the powerful Jaws of Life tools used to free victims trapped in car accidents.

There were personal and home safety demonstrations showing how to escape a fire – “stop, drop, and roll” – and the proper use of child car seats.

The Dix Hills Rescue Squad demonstrated the latest in lifesaving technology. More than 50 children received photo ID cards and emergency information for their parents, provided by the Mason Lodge.

The Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services participated with its new “All Hazards Training Trailer,” an interactive hands-on exhibit that uses simulated fire, smoke and heat to teach fire safety in the home.
