Dix Hills Ice Rink Skate Swap Saturday

Have skates that no longer fit your child, even though you only bought them a few months ago? Have no one to pass them down to?

Instead of throwing them out, come down to the Dix Hills Ice Rink Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. and drop off your used jerseys, pads, helmets and skates. In return, you will receive a voucher that will admit you into the “Skate Swap.”

In the “Skate Swap” you can shop in a boutique of donated equipment that will be coordinated by members of the Huntington Youth Council. There will be complimentary refreshments and a free skate period from 4 to 6 p.m., courtesy of Teachers Federal Credit Union.

Equipment was originally supposed to be donated by February 2, but Councilwoman Susan Berland, who organized the event, said they won't turn anyone away if they come with a non-perishable food item, which will be donated to the Community Food Council, Inc. of Huntington Station.

Berland said that the Council, which is made up of all ten high schools in the district, is supervising the event. "This is the first year we are trying this, and I think it's a great idea, a 'green' idea. Hockey equipment is very expensive and is very quickly outgrown. This is a way to 'recycle' it. And we are lucky that the Teachers Federal Credit Union was nice enough to pay for the ice time, so that everyone can skate for free from  4 to 6. It should be fun."
