Members of the Dix Hills Fire Department helped deliver a baby boy in a car after the mother realized she wasn’t going to make it to the hospital Monday night.
According to fire officials, a Dix Hills husband called 911 when his wife went into labor at their Crawford Drive home just two days before her due date at around 7:29 p.m. The woman’s water broke and her contractions were five minutes apart when they got into their car to go to the hospital. The couple soon realized they needed assistance.

Ambulance crews quickly responded to the scene to find the mother to be in a lot of pain with the head of the baby already crowning. An EMT helped guide the baby boy out. Blaze was born at 7:35 p.m.

The baby and the mother were taken to Huntington Hospital with a Suffolk County Police escort in tow.

This is the Dix Hills couple’s second child. The name “Blaze” was decided months ago, but the parents deemed the name even more fitting since he was delivered by the Dix Hills Fire Department.
Dix Hills Rescue Squad Lieutenant EMT Meagan Pereira helped deliver the baby and cut the umbilical cord while paramedic Chris Tremblay suctioned the baby boy when he was born to determine he was in good condition.
EMT-CC Chief Berkowitz held and suctioned the baby and Tremblay assisted the mother inside the ambulance.
This was the first baby delivery for Chief Berkowitz and Lieutenant Pereira and the second for Tremblay.
Dix Hills first assistant chief Tom Napolitano, second assistant chief Alan Berkowitz, a paramedic responder and two Dix Hills ambulance crews all responded to the call.
Also assisting in the delivery were EMT's Louis Aquino, Thomas Nostramo and Driver Matthew Antretter on the first ambulance, as well as EMT's Jonna Brady, Martin Levy and Driver Hillary Bogi on the second ambulance.
