Elderly Melville Couple Killed By Drunken Driver: Police

An elderly Melville couple were struck and killed by a drunken driver while attempting to cross the road in Massapequa Park on Saturday night, police say.

According to authorities, Barbara and Melvyn Glickman, both 77 years old, were attempting to cross Merrick Road near Park Boulevard in Massapequa Park, when they were struck an 2015 Ford Explorer at 8:10 p.m.

The husband and wife were transported to an area hospital, where they died from their injuries, police said.

The driver of the SUV, 63-year-old John Hartwig, of Massapequa Park, was found to have been driving while intoxicated and he was placed under arrest at the scene, police said.

Hartwig was charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular manslaughter and two counts of DWI. He will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday.
