Fire Guts Second Floor Of Melville Home

The blaze broke out Thursday morning.

The second floor of a Melville home undergoing renovations was gutted by a blaze on Thursday morning.

According to authorities, about 60 firefighters responded to the 5,000 square-foot Phaetons Drive home at 6:47 a.m. The blaze was brought under control within 45 minutes, but the entire second floor of the house was gutted by the fire and the first floor suffered water damage.

The cause of the blaze appears to be accidental and is under investigation by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Town of Huntington fire marshal.

No injuries were reported.

To battle the blaze, firefighters used eight trucks from Melville, Huntington Manor, Plainview, East Farmingdale and Greenlawn fire departments. All units were under the command of Melville Fire Chief Jason Bernfeld and assistant chiefs Chris Nolan and David Kaplan. The Huntington Fire Department and Huntington Community First Aid Squad provided standby coverage for Melville during the alarm.
