Fix the Dix Hills Road/Jericho Intersection But Not This Way

Ellen Cleary wrote this  in response to the state Department of Transportation proposals to alter the Dix Hills Road/Jericho Turnpike intersection.

I travel back and forth to work every day traveling Dix Hills Road and it seems to me the problem is with Dix Hills Road south. Only too often someone in the left north-bound lane decides he must go up Broadway-Greenlawn Road or someone in the right north-bound lane doesn’t want to wait for turning left traffic and swings either up Dix Hills Road or a left onto Jericho Turnpike.  

I think a good amount of accidents would be prevented if the road was labeled better by overhead signs with a sharp and soft left turn arrow for the left lane and the same for the right lane.  The dotted white line tracking the traffic in both directions (as on Route 110 by Costco) would also help.   

In my opinion a must for Dix Hills Road south is for both the TD Bank exit and the shopping center entrance/exit on Dix Hills Road to be eliminated.  Their traffic flow just complicates this intersection. Cars exiting the bank parking lot wanting to make a right stay in the left lane until the last minute and swing in front of a right turning vehicle.  Cars not wanting to wait for the light cut from the bank through the shopping center lot and exit onto Jericho.  

Typically, it takes me three to four lights to clear this intersection between 5:30 and 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday evening between traffic and the bank traffic exiting the drive-thru windows.   

The congestion problem is so many cars from this south corner with so many options within a few hundred feet.  Why not make Dix Hills Road south of Jericho Turnpike a one-way south?

People would then travel to Park Avenue or Pidgeon Hill Road and make a simple left or right turn.
