The program aims to help senior citizens maintain and stay in their homes.

Huntington senior citizens may be eligible for a town-based program that aims to help them maintain and stay in their homes, officials said.

Managed through the Town of Huntington’s Senior Citizens Division, the Residential Repair Program offers free craftspeople by appointment who provide simple home repairs and installations for residents aged 60 and older.

Eligible residents must reside in the Town of Huntington, own their own homes and live alone or with other seniors. Appointments can be made by calling 631-351-3253, ext 4002.

The program offers simple maintenance and repair services including cleaning gutters, fixing faucets and installing special-needs handrails and smoke alarms.

Those services requiring the skills of a licensed craftspersons, however, are not provided through this program. Clients are responsible for the cost of the materials but the installation and repair work is free.

The program helps seniors prevent their homes from falling into disrepair, said Leg. D’Amaro, D-Huntington Station.

“This program reduces some of our elderly residents’ concerns about maintenance and makes it easier for seniors to stay in the homes that they have lived and raised their families in for their entire lives,” D’Amaro said.
