On July 20, 2009, 19-year-old Half Hollow Hills East alumnus and University of Buffalo student Matthew Scarpati was . In his memory, the Miles For Matt Foundation, an approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization was established.

Scarpati was an outstanding soccer player, having played three years of varsity for Half Hollow Hills High School East.

The soccer tournament was established to be a yearly celebration of Scarpati's life by bringing the Long Island soccer community together.
