Lori Horowitz--Sculptor Deluxe

Need a 7-foot-tall Spiderman? Lori Horowitz made one for Marvel Comics to use at FAO Schwartz. 

What about a 13-foot-tall Hummel-look-alike statue, made of papier mache, but resembling ceramic? Did that too.

Maybe a 10-foot-tall "chocolate bar?" She made those too, for "Regis and Kathie Lee."

Horowitz was the lead scenic artist at the Engleman Theater for "It's a Wonderful Life."  She did "Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat" at the Eugene Orloff Theater. 

She's designed Christmas windows on Fifth Avenue for Lord & Taylor and Gucci.

She's done TV commercials too and has taught at Five Towns College. She designed "The Learning Tree" outside Chestnut Hill Elementary School. 

She was a founding member of LIPPS (Long Island Professional Sculptors and Supporters. She's had recent sculpture shows at the Petite Gallery in Huntington;  at Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson;  at the Art-trium in Melville; at the Art League in Dix Hills, as well as other locations. 

Horowitz said she has "gone green," and tries to use all natural materials, instead of plastic. Her favorite sculpting material is papier mache, because it's very strong but lightweight. 

She said that when she's creating a project, she sees it finished in her head before she even begins.

"And unlike many people, I sculpt first and then draw the design on paper afterward," she said.

"That's the hardest part--getting what's in your head on paper," she explained. "What's in your head doesn't help anyone. You have to be able to communicate your ideas. No one is a one-man show."
