UPDATED: Man Critically Injured After Being Hit by Car on Route 110

The 43-year-old was trying to cross the road when he was struck early Friday morning, police say.

MELVILLE, NY - A 43-year-old man was critically injured after being struck by a car while trying to cross Route 110 in Melville early Friday, police said.

John Erickson, of Mount Sinai, was attempting to cross Route 110 at the intersection of Spagnoli Road at about 1:05 a.m. when he was hit by a Mercedes-Benz that was heading south on Route 110, police said.

Erickson was treated by the Melville Rescue Squad and airlifted via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

The driver of the car, 46-year-old Maurice White, of Massapequa, was not injured and no criminal charges have been filed.

Two ambulances, an engine, paramedic and first responder along with 20 firefighters and rescue personnel responded to the crash. Melville firefighters assisted Suffolk Police with the helicopter landing zone on Route 110, fire officials say.

All units were under the command of chief Jason Bernfeld and third assistant chief David Kaplan.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
